Jonathan Halls is repeating his popular two-day web writing workshop again in Bucharest, Romania.  This will be the third session in three months. 

The sell-out session in September - which was repeated and sold out again in October - is now likely to be repeated again in December 2008. 

Right now we're looking for dates that will fit Jonathan's schedule as well as that of Newsplex and the Media Management Institute.  As soon as we have confirmed dates, we'll publish them.

This leading-edge workshop on web writing is part of the Ifra Newsplex curriculum and is delivered by Romania's Media Management Institute in collaboration with Ifra Newsplex.

Jonathan is an associate consultant with Ifra Newsplex which provides multimedia training to newspapers and magazines around the world. 

Jonathan conducts all his training for the print industry exclusively through Newsplex.  Newsplex offers training for publishing companies in all aspects of video production, audio production, multimedia storytelling, editorial decision-making and editorial leadership.

The course

Any journalist filing stories for digital media must be familiar with how consumers read text on the Web and emerging platforms like mobile phones.

This course explains how Web surfers perceive information in different ways. And it shows you how to package your stories so they are easily understood by Web consumers.

Participants learn principle concepts of online narrative structures and are taught the key stages of constructing a story for the web.

The training provides journalists with the essential basic knowledge to write for digital media.

Learning outcomes

After this session the participant will be able to:

  • Identify characteristics of how surfers read web content in terms of current usability research.
  • Identify general web conventions to make text easier to read on the screen.
  • Identify relevant story structures for the web.
  • Understand the basic principles and power of hypertext and non-linear story telling.
  • Construct sentences and paragraphs that are easy to read on the web following web writing conventions.
  • Write navigational text (headings, banners, and buttons) and stories that are quick and easy to read on the web.
  • Develop non-linear narrative to convey complex stories.
  • Identify keyword phrases for inclusion in story narrative and search engine optimization strategy.
  • Integrate non-text storytelling tools with text to enrich a story and speed up comprehension. (Images, animation, audio, video and community) based on the story and its audience.
